SFF Podcast Worldbuilding for Masochists a Hugo Award Finalist for Best Fancast for the Fourth Year in a Row
Austin, TX - March 29, 2024 - For the fourth year in a row, Worldbuilding for Masochists is a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Fancast. The Hugos recognize excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy, and are awarded by the World Science Fiction Society at each year’s Worldcon. The Hugo Award ceremony will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, this August during Worldcon.
The podcast, which began in 2019, takes readers, writers, and world-creators alike through all the elements one might consider when building alternative worlds, be they fantasy, science fiction, or role-playing-inspired.
With new episodes every other Wednesday, guest authors, the occasional expletive, and an ever-expanding map, the show explores history, culture, science, and more. Guests include a wide array of award-winning writers, editors, and creators in the SFF community and beyond, weighing in on how they worldbuild.
The hosts–Marshall Ryan Maresca, Cass Morris, Rowenna Miller (emeritus), and Natania Barron–wish to extend their gratitude to their amazing listeners, Discord pals, and gracious guests, who’ve made every episode an absolute blast.
"Seeing Worldbuilding for Masochists grow and expand over the years has been such a fantastic experience. We're thrilled to be recognized in this way, and it's humbling and thrilling to be in the company of so many other remarkable nominees,” says host Marshall Ryan Maresca.
Host Cass Morris reflects on her own tenure: “Getting to do this podcast with such amazing people–my co-hosts and all our fabulous guests–is a constant joy. I'm so grateful to our listeners for their enthusiasm.”
That joy as also expressed by host Rowenna Miller. "It's a huge honor to be nominated, and I'm especially grateful for our community of listeners and our incredible guests, all of whom have made this podcast such a joy to be a part of!"
In late 2023, the team announced that Rowenna Miller would be stepping down as a host, with fantasy author Natania Barron replacing her. “I jumped at the chance to be part of Worldbuilding for Masochists, and can’t wait to see where we go next,” Barron says.
Traveling Light, the anthology inspired by the co-created world of the podcast, also launches this summer, featuring stories by Mike Chen, Kate Elliott, Marie Brennan, and many others.
